Controller Masterclass: One-Ways, Lurking, and Dome Smoke Placements

A team without a competent Controller is blind. Smokes are the foundational building blocks of tactical map control. However, throwing a bad smoke is often worse than throwing no smoke at all. If your smoke bulges out of a chokepoint, you give enemy duelists a free pocket to flash out of.

This masterclass guide covers advanced smoke geometry, one-way setups, and the psychological art of lurking as a Controller agent like Omen, Clove, Brimstone, or Astra.

1. Flush Smokes vs. Bulging Smokes

The golden rule of smoke placement is absolute containment. Your smoke must sit perfectly flush with the outer edges of the doorway or chokepoint.

How to Place Flawless Smokes:

  • Avoid Deep Smokes: If you place a smoke too deep inside an enemy tunnel, defenders can walk up to the edge of the smoke and hold wide angles without being seen from site.
  • Eliminate Gaps: Ensure the outer perimeter of your smoke sphere completely seals the wall geometry. A tiny sliver gap will be abused by enemy Operatör players.
  • Timing the Execute: Never deploy your smokes 15 seconds before your team is ready to enter. Smokes have limited durations (e.g., Omen smokes last 15s, Brimstone lasts 19.25s). Coordinate deployment with your entry fragger.

2. The Power of One-Way Smokes

A one-way smoke is placed on an elevated ledge or box, creating a visual barrier that obscures the enemy's upper body while leaving their legs completely visible to you from ground level.

  1. Omen Ledge Placements: Use Omen's precise vertical targeting indicator to place hollow shadow spheres on door frames (e.g., Ascent A Main archway or B Main window).
  2. Cypher Cyber Cages: Combine Cypher cages with map ledges to create instant, triggerable one-ways that stop enemy executes in their tracks.
  3. Viper Poison Cloud Orbs: Learn specific throw lineups that lodge Viper's emitter orb onto high wall fixtures, allowing for repeatable one-way toxic denial.

3. The Art of the Controller Lurk

Because Controllers can deploy their utility from across the map (especially Omen, Astra, and Clove), you do not always need to stack with your 4-man main execute. You can operate as a silent lurker on the opposite bomb site.

  • Global Smoke Support: Deploy your A-site execute smokes from B Main, then silently creep up B Main to catch rotating defenders off guard in their own spawn.
  • Selling the Fake: Drop heavy smoke utility on one bomb site to convince enemy rotators that a full execute is happening, while your team silently takes the opposite site.

4. Managing Cooldowns & Economy

Omen and Clove feature regenerating smoke mechanics, whereas Brimstone has a hard cap of 3 smokes per round. Manage your utility economy carefully based on the round timer and enemy rotation tendencies.
