The Ultimate Economy Guide: When to Buy, Save, and Force in VCT Meta

Mechanics can win you rounds, but flawless economy management wins you championships. One of the most common reasons ranked teams throw massive leads is disorganized buying. When two players force-buy Spectres while three players save Classic pistols, the entire team structure collapses.

This guide covers the advanced economic strategies utilized by premier VCT IGLs like Boaster, Saadhak, and JohnQT to maintain constant financial pressure on opponents.

1. Pistol Round Math & Round 2 Conversions

Winning the pistol round gives your team a massive 85% statistical advantage to take Round 2. However, how you manage your credits after winning determines the trajectory of the entire half.

Round 2 Buy Rules (After Winning Pistol):

  • Never Save on Round 2: Buy Spectres, Bulldogs, or Outlaws with Heavy Shields. You must guarantee the round win against enemy eco pistols.
  • The IGL Utility Buy: Have one support player (like Cypher or Omen) buy full utility plus Light Shields/Stinger to drop a rifle to a duelist on Round 3.
  • Farming Ultimate Orbs: Prioritize securing ultimate orbs on Round 2 to get game-breaking ultimates (like Killjoy Lockdown or Phoenix Run It Back) active by Round 3.

2. Mastering the "Bonus Round" (Round 3)

Round 3 is the trickiest round in Valorant. If you won the first two rounds, your team will be carrying damaged Spectres and Bulldogs into enemy players who now have full Vandals and Phantoms. This is known as the Bonus Round.

  1. Goal: Do not upgrade your weapons. Your objective is to inflict maximum economic damage and steal enemy rifles.
  2. Positioning: Play close, off-angles where SMGs excel, or stack a site 4-man heavy to overwhelm a lone rifle entry.
  3. Economy Outcome: Even if you lose the bonus round, you will enter Round 4 with 5,000+ credits per player for a full rifle buy.

3. When to Force Buy vs. Full Save

Understanding minimum next-round buy thresholds is crucial. Always check the Minimum Next Round credit indicator in the buy menu. You need at least 3,900 credits (Vandal + Half Shield + Utility) guaranteed for the following round.

  • The Half-Buy (Eco): Buy Sheriff or Marshal, but ensure your remaining credit balance stays above 2,000 credits so you can afford a rifle next round.
  • The Hero Buy: If one player has 4,500 credits while the rest have 1,500, buy one Vandal and drop it to your star duelist while the buyer plays a Sheriff.
  • Overtime & Match Point: Economy rules go out the window on round 12 or match point. Spend every single credit available.

4. Synchronizing with Your Team

Communication is your best economic tool. Use the pre-round buy phase to call out team buys clearly. A synchronized 5-man Sheriff eco is infinitely more dangerous than a fractured, disorganized half-buy.
